One of my fondest video game memories from school was discussing the video game Driver my junior year of high school. I didn’t own a PlayStation, but I did purchase Driver on PC. One day at lunch, I discovered a fellow student who was a fan of the game and we spent weeks discussing the finer points of trying to escape the police and mastering the slick driving technique.
The things I remember most about Driver is the incredibly tough tutorial and the thrill of being chased by the police. The tutorial is widely remembered as being insanely difficult and it was unskippable, so the game forced you to master the driving techniques before allowing you to enjoy the game. But once you got into the game, the action was top notch and the police chases were insane! With that being said, I remember just driving around and obeying the laws of traffic and enjoying myself quite a bit.
I loved Driver, but sadly I didn’t play many of the games that followed. I never played Driver 2 and by the time I got around to trying some of the other sequels, Grand Theft Auto had firmly replaced Driver as criminal game of choice. Driver just couldn’t keep up and it’s a shame.
I’d love to see the first two Driver games remastered as I’d love to experience them again. But I don’t see that happening anytime soon, so I relived my Driver memories through this excellent video that covers the entire history of the franchise. It doesn’t include any annoying narration, just clips and music.
