Friday night, I finally got a chance to play my new Wii and well… the amount of nostalgia that overcame was pretty incredible. It instantly took me back to 2006 when I got my Wii and all the great memories I had over the years playing it such as it being the only video game my grandmother ever played.
The Wii was an incredible system that featured some really good games, some interesting concepts, and a ton of really bad games. The term shovelware showed up sometime in 2007-2008 and it really described what was happening to the system. For every Mario Galaxy that was released, there ten other cheap mini-games featuring everything from Gordon Ramsey to Cold Stone to M&Ms. But as weird as that may sound, I kinda miss it. It was a time when all games got physical releases and games weren’t limited to small indie digital releases or huge budget physical releases.
I can think of some real stinkers that I played on the Wii like Far Cry, but I can think of dozens more games that I really enjoyed. I’ve been thinking about what games I wanted to pick back up for the Wii (or simply play again and I don’t have a system that will play them.) So, I decided to start a Wii Wishlist to help keep all my thoughts organized.
I decided to skip the graphics for the games, because it would just be too time consuming.
Games I Never Had:
-Tiger Woods 10 or 11: I hear these two were the best Tiger Woods games for the Wii and I really would love to dig into the professional world of golf in Wii form.
-Wii Party: Brandy loves mini-games and this would be right up here alley.
-Ghostbusters: I’ve played through this game a couple of time son the Xbox 360 and currently have a game going on the Switch, but I like the animation of the Wii version and would love to try it out. I know it the game was developed by a different developer and has some differences.
-Mario Super Sluggers: Mario + Baseball = I’m there
-Mario Strikers Charged: Mario + Soccer = I’m there
-Mario Sports Mix: Another Mario Sports title that I’d like to try out
Games I Had:
-WarioWare Smooth Moves: A collection of quirky mini-games that I enjoyed and think Brandy will love.
-ExciteTruck: This game was a blast, as was ExciteBots. It was dumb arcade racing that just kept getting crazier and crazier.
-EA Slapshot: This was a fun way hockey game that EA put some actual effort into.
-Boom Blox/Boom Blox Bash Party: So, in the early 2000’s, EA announced a huge partnership with Steven Spielberg that was suppose to lead to all sorts of cool games. Instead, we just got boom blox, a very basic game where you throw balls at blocks. If it wasn’t for the Wii motion, this wouldn’t be worth a damn, but I had a lot of fun with it.
-Need for Speed Nitro: This was a strange racing game that not many paid attention to. I really enjoyed it, it reminded me of the arcade racers of the 90’s.
-WarioLand Shake It: A platformer starring Wario that was damn good and overlooked a lot. It had some awesome cell shading animation.
Games I Want, but Are On the Fence About:
-Scarface: I loved this game and sadly it didn’t get near the respect it deserved. It was a worthy open world game that is largely forgotten. I have a feeling it won’t hold up nearly as well.
-The Godfather: Another open world crime game that I loved. I have some reservations about how well this will hold up in the world of Red Dead Redemption 2.
-The Simpsons Game: I’ve played this game twice (and never on the Switch) and I’ve enjoyed it but I have a feeling the frustrating camera from ten years ago, would be even worse now.
-Wii Rabbids Go Home: A story based Rabbids game that was fun, but I don’t remember beating it. I’m not sure if there was a problem or if I just got bored.
-MadWorld: I love this game and it was arguably my favorite Wii game. It’s also the game I played the most, so I just don’t know if I’d actually play it again.
I’d love to have these next three games, but they are games that were made to be played with the balance board. I’d probably buy them if I got a balance board, I’m not sure if I would without it.
-Super Monkey Ball Step and Roll:
-Mario and Sonic at the Olympics
I’d love to have these next three games, but they are all “lightgun” type games. I’d need a Zapper or some sort of Wii gun and I would purchase them without it. They are not a high priority for me.
-House of the Dead: Overkill
-Dead Space: Extraction
-Elebits: I played the hell out of this game, which wasn’t much more than hide and seek. It was one of the first Wii games that came out (and one of the first that I had) so I really enjoyed it at the time. I don’t see myself every going back through it, but it always sticks in my mind as a solid Wii memory.
-Far Cry Vengeance: Known for being a broken game, I couldn’t help myself buy to pick it up for $10 shortly after it released. Man was it bad. It had moments of being a decent game until finally it was so broken I couldn’t progress anymore.
-Silent Hill: Shattered Memories: I enjoyed this game a ton, but there was a running section of the game I just couldn’t beat. This game went down as one of the greatest games I played but had to stop because it was too difficult/broken.
-MLB Power Pros: I loved this simplistic baseball game. It’s the baseball equivalent of Fire Pro Wrestling in Japan, where graphics are not important in comparison to gameplay.
