In 2000, Kevin Smith adapted his 1994 low budget independent film Clerks into an animated series. Smith turned down a thirteen episode order by UPN so that the show could have more exposure on a bigger network like ABC. Sadly, ABC didn’t care for the show all that much it was cancelled after two episodes aired. Six episodes were made and released on DVD a year later.
The two episodes that aired were aired out of order and the show really didn’t fit with ABCs other programming. It had low ratings and apparently tested low with an older audience, which is no big surprise. Sadly, Clerks The Animated Series is one of my favorite cartoons of all-time and I really wish it would have lived on in another format or on another channel. I loved the animation style, the humor, and the character designs. So much so, I had a version of myself created in the Clerks style a few years ago.
The DVD set is truly a gem and it includes a fantastic commentary that makes viewing the series a second time a must see affair. I highly recommend checking out Clerks The Animated Series if you are fan of Kevin Smith or just adult animation in general.
