As I drove into work this morning, I heard a song that I hadn’t heard in a very long time called Endless Love I – Beautiful Myth by Jackie Chan and Kim Hee Sun. Jackie Chan sings the verses in Mandarin and Kim Hee Sun sings in Korean.
In 1996 Rumble in the Bronx was released and for a kid who grew up on Jean Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal I was enamored. Here was a martial artist who fused comedy into his performance and still came off incredibly badass. Jackie Chan fever ran wild for me and I spent my time in the video store trying to dig up all the Jackie Chan movies I could possibly find.
In the 90’s, my mom worked at a Tae Kwon Do school and the owner of the school heard of my infatuation with Jackie Chan and decided to blow my mind by pulling out a Jackie Chan record. I never got a chance to listen to it, but my mind was blown, not only was Jackie Chan a fantastic actor and martial artist but the guy could sing too!
Years went by and my fandom for Jackie Chan never died. I didn’t watch every movie as it came out, but when opportunity presented itself I’d bite. One day I was browsing the DVD section in Big Lots and I ran across a few Jackie Chan movies I hadn’t seen such as The Tuxedo, The Medallion, and The Myth. I bought all three and went home to devour them. They ranged in quality quite a bit (although none of those movies were all that great) but the one thing that really stood out was the song that ran over the credits of The Myth. It was soft, beautiful, and seemed to speak to my soul. I just felt so at ease with this beautiful song playing and after listening to it a couple of times I decided to research the artists. Which of course, were Jackie Chan and Kim Hee Sun.
I ripped an mp3 from a YouTube upload of the song and have listened to it off and on for years. The song is not on Spotify, so it doesn’t cross over on my usual playlists but I do keep the mp3 on my phone and sometimes it pops up on shuffle like it did this morning.
I guess, I felt like sharing this song with everyone because I think it’s important to embrace those little things that make ya smile or make ya feel at ease, especially when everyone is freaking out. Endless Love is just one of many songs that makes me happy. Maybe it’ll make you happy too.
